The Network
medienwerk.nrw is the network for media art and digital culture in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Germany. Consisting of 25 institutions, including art associations, museums, exhibition spaces, festivals, production sites for performing arts, archives, and universities, we see ourselves as an alliance of diverse cultural producers of the media art scene of NRW. The partners in the network can look back on a history that now spans 20 years. In their projects, they focus on the impact of digital technologies on society from an artistic perspective as well as the cultural significance of technology.

Our joint activities are as diverse as each and every partner in the network: In workshops, conferences, and festivals, we promote the exchange within the scene of NRW. We aim to link the knowledge and experiences of the region in order to strengthen and visualize this unique landscape of media art and digital culture in Europe. Together we pursue the goal of representing the interests of media artists, institutional as well as independent media art organizations in cultural-political debates.

We understand media art as a heterogeneous artistic practice. Using speculative, experimental, exploratory and documentary strategies, media art addresses, comments on and translates current issues relating to art, technology and society. Its spectrum ranges from visual arts to film, music and performing arts to more recent forms of artistic practice such as virtual reality and hybrid spaces.
